Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani who was visiting Damascus in the first leg of his regional tour to Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, met with the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and stressed the continuation of the Islamic Republic’s support for the Syrian people and government, and the resistance front as a whole.
While expressing optimism for the future of Syria, Ali Larijani maintained that ‘resistance’ must be the ‘pivot point’ of the Syrian people.
He highlighted the significance of the Syrian FM’s recent visit to Tehran and said, “holding meetings such as the trilateral one between Iran, Syria and Iraq in Tehran earlier this month has many benefits and in the future we will definitely add to the list of participating members in such meetings.”
Walid al-Muallem, for his part, expressed gratitude for the support Syria has been receiving from the Islamic Republic of Iran and said, “Iran has been a faithful friend to Syria at all times and its role in the region is effective and constructive. The visit of the Iranian delegation to Damascus holds great significance considering the current regional developments.”
Al-Muallem referred to his recent participation in Iran-Syria-Iraq trilateral meeting in Tehran on the sidelines of the international conference on World against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) on Dec. 10, and maintained that the conference has had positive impacts on the regional level and on the people.
Before the meeting with Syrian FM, Ali Larijani had held meetings with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham.
Larijani also attended a joint press conference with al-Laham on Sunday.
Larijani, accompanied by Chairman of Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi, Deputy-FM for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-abdollahian, and a number of high-ranking officials, is next to visit Beirut, capital of Lebanon, and in the third and final leg of his regional tour, he will visit Iraq.
