Oil price plunge will harm all countries: Deputy FM

TEHRAN, Dec. 10 (MNA) – In an exclusive interview to IRNA, Deputy FM Amir-Abdollahian shed light on Iran’s role in fighting ISIL in Iraq, Iran’s influence in the region as well as some regional countries’ role in plummeting oil prices.

In response to a question on whether Iraq has asked the Islamic Republic for military aid, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian noted that ever since the recent developments in Iraq, one of its appeals to other countries including Iran has been military assistance and added, “we have aided Iraq by all means and within the framework of the international law.”

“We do not intervene in Iraq’s domestic affairs and all the measures we have taken in aiding Iraq against terrorism have been strictly in line with the legitimate demands of the Iraqi government,” he continued.

In regard to the collapse of oil prices, and the possibility of Saudi Arabia lobbying with the US in this respect, Amir-Abdollahian maintained, “today, ISIL is posing a great threat to the very countries that have played a part, knowingly or otherwise, in its formation. The same wrong policies have also been taken in the case of oil prices. The failure of some oil countries in the region, which I'd rather not to name, in controlling and managing the oil prices have been based on taking wrong decisions in OPEC and this will ultimately harm all countries; some in the short-term and others in the long-term.”

“Of course, some close consultations between our oil officials and relevant authorities in the region are in progress and we hope to soon find a solution which will meet the interests of all regional countries,” he added.

Amir-Abdollahian referred to Iran’s prominent role in the region and said, “we have a positive influence on various issues in the region, and will use this influence to provide the maximum national security and interests, as well as to maintain the security in the region.”

While stressing that this influence is not, to the claim of some countries, interfering in other countries’ affairs, he added, “our positive influence in the region does not have any characteristics of interference. For example, Iran’s influence in Yemen is only to maintain the sustainable security in this country since it will directly impact the security in the Persian Gulf region, the Islamic Republic as well as Iraq.”
