President Rouhani who arrived in Astrakhan, Russia, to attend the summit of the Caspian littoral states’ leaders held a meeting with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev on Monday.
During this meeting on the sidelines of the summit, President Rouhani highlighted the good ties between Iran and Azerbaijan and said, “the security and development of both countries are integrated and we must not allow countries that oppose the development of friendly relations between Iran and Azerbaijan to pose any hindrance in our progress.”
“There is a great potential in the fields of energy, oil and gas, trade, environment and tourism,” stated President Rouhani and continued, “the joint commission between the two countries should be playing a more active role in these areas.”
Rouhani stressed the importance of North-South corridor and said, “construction of Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway has been accelerated and we must connect the railway between the two counties with the participation of the Azerbaijan, since this will be to the benefit of both sides.”
He put emphasis on further cooperation between the two countries in private sector and demanded facilitation in issuing visas to better accommodate Iranian businessmen in Azerbaijan.
During this meeting held at the residency of the Iranian Consul General in Astrakhan, President Aliyev stressed the continuing security between the two countries and said, “Azerbaijani people and government are eager to expand ties with Iran in all areas.”
President Aliyev pointed to the construction of the railway which connects Azerbaijan to open waters and said, “this railway has a great prospect and can meet the interests of both countries and their neighbors.”
He expressed hope for reaching desirable agreements in oil, gas, trade and tourism projects with Iran during President Rouhani’s future visit to Azerbaijan. He also deemed Iran’s advancement and capability in various felids such as medicine of great value and requested cooperation with Iranian companies in such areas.
