“In a region which is suffering from extremism, violence and terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the axis of regional stability and responsible moderation, has constructive interaction with the international community and does not accept its human rights situation to be judged on the basis of biased reports,” said Marzieh Afkham, Iran Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, on Thursday.
Emphasizing that the Islamic Republic considers the appointment of the UN special rapporteur on human rights as an insult to the great nation of Iran and does not recognize it, she noted that the procedure for the appointment of a special rapporteur at the UN is entirely political and pursued by a select group of countries at the UN Human Rights Council.
Afkham further argued that the report has been prepared with political motives and has unfairly tried to describe the human rights state of Iran. She also emphasized that the main sources for the report have been terrorist and violence-seeking groups responsible for killing innocent people, making it unreliable and without a legal merit.
The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman then pointed to the rapporteur’s lack of understanding of developments in Iran, stressing that the report has ignored the high turnout of the Iranian population in the nation’s latest presidential election in June. Shaheed’s report was also slammed on Wednesday by the Islamic Republic’s permanent mission at the United Nations.
