Iran crowned William Jones Cup champion

TAIPEI, July 26 (MNA) -- Iran’s basketball team beat the Philippines 85-60 in its last game of the William Jones Cup at the Hsinchuang Gymnasium in Taiwan on Sunday and won the title.

Having won six games and lost two, Iran finished first in the 31st William Jones Cup International Tournament and won a cash prize of $20,000.

Iran defeated Kazakhstan, Taiwan B, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon and the Philippines and lost to South Korea and Taiwan in the tourney. 

A total of nine teams including Iran, Japan, the Philippines, Jordan, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Taiwan B, and Taiwan participated in the tournament.
 
The tournament was first held in 1977 and was named after basketball promoter and co-founder of the International Basketball Federation, Renato William Jones.
 
Iran prepares itself to participate in the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship in August in Tianjin, China.
