Mikael Hafstrom’s horror film “1408” is competing in the Spiritual Films Section of Iran’s most prestigious film gala currently underway in Tehran.
“The organizers of the gala have categorized the film in this section due to its storyline, which focuses on the connection between spirits and man. However the spirits featured in the film are disturbing,” Adel said in a review session held after the screening of the film on Friday evening.
“I generally class films as spiritual when they are centered on religious-historical themes, holy persons and sacred subjects, however films like ‘1408’ are produced for commercial purposes,” he noted.
“In this film we observe that the leading character reaches a type of salvation via his daughter’s soul. This is the only feature of the film that differentiates it from movies in the horror genre,” he added.
Based on Stephen King’s short horror story of the same name, “1408” is about the supernatural writer Mike Enslin, an author of two successful books on paranormal phenomena. As part of the research for his next book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying in it as a guest.
Enslin believes that the stories circulating about room 1408 are just myths and wants to disprove that paranormal occurrences have taken place in it.
However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin’s stay and warns him of impending danger. Enslin is determined to carry out his plan. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don’t check out by noon.
