Poland, Bulgaria, Korea, Brazil Through to World U-21 Volleyball Semis

TEHRAN, August 29 (Mehr News Agency) -- Four teams of Poland, Bulgaria, South Korea, and Brazil rolled into the semifinals of 2003 FIVB Men’s Under-21 Volleyball Championship here Friday.

Poland squeezed into the semifinals as it beat Serbia and Montenegro.

Serbia and Montenegro that eyed the trophy was eliminated in the quarterfinals as it lost to the Polish side 3-1 in the 12,000-seater hall of Azadi Sports Complex, 10km west of Tehran.


Poland won the first, second, and fourth sets 26-24, 25-23, 25-23 and lost the third game 25-22.

Bulgaria was the second team that booked a berth in the semifinals by crushing the Russians 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 25-19.

South Korea won a marathon clash against the Germans in a quarterfinal.

The Koreans lost the first set 26-24 but it fought back to win the second game 25-21.

Korea made it 2-1 as it won the third set 25-19. The Germans struggled to a 25-23 victory in the fourth set but failed in the fifth game and lost 15-11.

The eagerly-awaited match between Iran and world champion Brazil started at 07:30 pm.

Over 12,000 passionate bass drum-beating supported Iran throughout the games but Brazil was too powerful and thrashed the host in three straight sets.

Brazil won 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 to prove intimidating.

Russia and Serbia and Montenegro will array against each other at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

Poland and Bulgaria will meet in a semifinal at 03:00 p.m. and Iran-Germany clash is to start at 05:00 p.m.

Brazil and South Korea will field their players at 07:00 p.m.
