Protecting citizens' rights guarantee for security in country: Zarif

TEHRAN, Dec. 20 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the protection of citizenship rights does not mean a slogan and imitation of the West, but an important need for the society and a guarantee for the rights of the people and the security of the country.

Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian nationals living in Baku on Tuesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Baku on Tuesday to participate in the fifth trilateral meeting with his Azeri and Turkish counterparts, slated to be held on Wednesday.

Zarif described Iranians as the most successful, most enlightened and most educated people in the world.

Pointing to the first anniversary of the introduction of the Charter of Citizens' Rights, Zarif said "looking at the countries of the region, the importance of citizens’ rights is determined by the security and the country's leading role in production and technology."

The fourth session of trilateral meeting was held in the Iranian city of Ramsar in the northern Mazandaran Province in April 2016. At the end of the session, foreign ministers of Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey issued a statement and signed two documents to strengthen trilateral cooperation and improve peace and security in the region.
