President Aoun made the remarks in a Friday meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, who visited Lebanon following his earlier visit to Syria for regional talks.
Aoun referred to the recent Iran-Russia-Turkey trilateral meeting on Syrian situation that was held in Moscow on Dec. 20, deeming it a significant step toward the settlement of regional crises, particularly the one in Syria. He further expressed hope that other countries would adopt the same position toward the resolution of conflicts in the region.
Jaberi Ansari, for his part, stressed Iran’s support for the methods and decisions of Lebanese leaders for settling their domestic political differences based on dialogue and national consensus, highlighting the need for adoption of the same model at the regional level for putting an end to the current conflicts in the Middle East.
He also expressed hope that Iran and Lebanon would be able to further expand their economic cooperation in the new era.
The Iranian diplomat also held talks with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Friday, where he commended Lebanon’s recent agreement on electing Michel Aoun as president after a 29-month leadership stalemate, expressing hope that this development would have a positive impact not only on Lebanon but on a regional scale as well.
Nabih Berri, for his part, hailed Iran’s positive role in regard to the recent achievements in region, stressing the need for continuation of negotiations as the only effective approach for settling regional conflicts.
