Gijón International Film Festival, established in 1963 and now in its 54th year, is one of the oldest film festivals in Europe, held annually in various sections in the coastal city Gijón, Spain.
In this edition, 15 films from various countries including Iran vie for a 20,000-euro cash prize in the main competition section.
Iranian films selected for screening in the festival include ‘Life and A Day’ by Saeed Roostaei, and ‘Inversion’ by Behnam Behzadi. ‘Radio Dreams’ by Iranian filmmaker Babak Jalali based in the US will also premiere in the Spainish film festival.
‘Life and A Day’, by Saeed Roostaei which gathered nine Crystal Simorgh in the latest edition of Fajr Festival, narrates the story of a heroine who wants to get out of her hostile environment, and will try it by accepting a (unclear) marriage proposal.
‘Inversion’, by Behmam Behzadi depicts a day of extreme pollution in Tehran in the lives of two protagonists, one of them suffering from serious respiratory problems. The pollution will be the trigger for the men of the family to try to change the lives of both women.
Nima Javidi is part of the juries for the main competition section presided by Spanish director Judith Colell and including programmer Kathleen Haney of WorldFest Houston, and screenwriter and director Claudia Pinto.
Nima Javidi won three prizes at the 52nd edition of FICX with his debut film, Melbourne (Best Director, Best Screenplay and Young Jury Award).
The 54th edition will be held on 19-26 November, 2016.
