UNICEF: millions of Iraqi children deprived of education

NEW YORK, Oct. 31 (MNA) – Almost two million Iraqi children do not attend school due to the conflict in that Middle East country, stated on Friday the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Regarding the start of the academic year in Iraq, the specialized agency informed that the violence and forced displacement have a devastating impact on education, with an additional million of children at risk of dropping out.

'Iraq is at risk of losing an entire generation to conflict', regretted Peter Hawkins, UNICEF representative in Iraq, at a press release.

According to the expert, the conflict has negatively impacted access to education: 70 percent of children have already lost at least one year of school.

According to UNICEF, one in five Iraqi schools cannot be used, because it had been destructed, severely damaged or it has been used to shelter the displaced people.

The schools that remain operative are overburdened, with classes with 60 or more students.

Iraq is experiencing an aggravated internal conflict due to the presence of extremist groups, such as the ISIL. The destabilization and violence were inherited from the invasion and occupation led by the United States in 2003.
