Putin said the terrorists were based in Syria with the aspiration to expand and destabilize entire regions, not just the Middle East.
During a ceremony with promoted officers on Tuesday, the president referred to the recruitment by the structure of the ISIL between followers in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
Putin said that the Russian military operation in Syria was a precautionary step in that direction, while it also demonstrated the ability to respond effectively to terrorist threats and other challenges in security matters.
The Russian military aid to Syria corresponds to the national military doctrine and international law, said the head of the Kremlin in his speech.
He stressed the readiness of Moscow to react appropriately and effectively to any danger to the country.
The President, on the other hand, called on the Federal Security Service (FSB) to identify the links of Russian combatants with international terrorists, extremist groups and sponsors.
The statesman estimated recently that between five and seven thousand citizens of Russia and the former Soviet republics are fighting in the ranks of the ISIL, banned in the country as a terrorist organization.
According to the head of state, the security services frustrated 20 actions of a terrorist nature so far this year, while 112 subversive elements were liquidated, including 26 leaders of extremist groups, which add up to more than 560 arrested.
Against the background of these figures Putin warned that the fight against terrorism in Russia is topical, much more in the context of global instability.
The Russian aviation began officially on September 30th an air offensive against the positions of the Islamic State and other Islamist organizations in Syria, at the request of President Bashar Al Assad.
