Ali Shamkhani who was receiving Jan Eliasson Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on Tuesday, pointed to some of ‘very bitter acts of terrorism in Syria’ which he believed was rooted in the lust for power of the hegemonic powers which had been setting the region on fire, besetting the region with bloodshed and killing of innocent civilians; “indifference of the UN about Palestinian issue poses a serious question of the authority of the important international organization in the eyes of the international public,” he told Eliasson.
Shamkhani who also represents the Leader of the Islamic Republic in Supreme National Security Council, touched upon the developments in Yemen as well; “the policy of unauthorized and unwanted-for interference in the country’s internal affairs and air strikes to destroy its crucial infrastructures are not to be tolerated,” he emphasized. “On Syria, our attempts had been focused on supporting the democratically-elected government of Assad to protect the lives of civilians from crimes against humanities by extremist terrorists; we would cooperate with the UN to exploit our experiences gained during recent years of crisis; in turn, the west should drastically change its policies in line with their apparent though unrealized fighting terrorism,” he demanded.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has been emphasizing, since the outset of the Syrian crisis in 2011, on avoiding of military solutions to the crisis and on Syrian-Syrian parties of any possible dialogue which would be unconditional as well,” Shamkhani said.
Still touching a different issue, Shamkhani believed that nuclear negotiations with west was a telling example of diplomatic path to safely bypassing the crisis and conflict; “despite the well-orchestrated propaganda, now after smoke cleared, the Islamic Republic of Iran came triumphant and upright, with the fact that we only sought peaceful nuclear technology and hated nuclear weapons,” added Leader’s representative to SNSC.
He also believed that threatening Iran to military invasion by some countries violated the UN Charter provisions, and “we expect to see that the UN, in line with its inherent duty, should intervene to effectively prevent the domination of propaganda in favor of democracy.”
Jan Eliasson, for his part, praised the good offices of the Islamic Republic of Iran about refugees and actively organizing the emigrants; “the UN would need Iran’s valuable experiences in dealing with refugee issue in different countries; Iran has had remarkable record in promoting the millennium development goals, and its steps taken in development are laudable,” he told Shamkhani.
Eliasson said that the Middle East was a region highly challenging; “crises in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq have all inflicted the nations with instability, pain and suffering in grand scale of humanity; the proxy war should be ended in some place, to embrace peace and security soon in the future,” he concluded.
