TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei here on Sunday appointed Ezzatollah Zarghami as the new director of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) for a five-year term.

"I appoint you as the director of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting due to your competency, experience, and knowledge about the organization," the Supreme Leader said.

"This national media outlet made eye-catching progress during Larijani's 10-year tenure and played a key role in the cultural, social, and political spheres.

"The organization is expected to attain the lofty status it deserves through your hard efforts, following up what has been done before," he added.

"Wise management brought about great development in this organization, helping it reach an appropriate level," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

He also expressed his appreciation of outgoing IRIB Director Ali Larijani and all the IRIB staff who supported him in this great task.

The Supreme Leader said he hoped that Zarghami and the other managers and staff of IRIB would be successful.

Prior to his new appointment, Zarghami was the IRIB deputy director for legal, parliamentary and provincial affairs.
