Iran, Japan reaffirm commitment to Afghanistan

TEHRAN, Sept. 7 (MNA) -- Iran and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to work together to help resolve the Afghanistan crisis.

During a meeting with Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Kenichiro Sasae in Tehran on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki called for the implementation of the Iran-Japan joint projects in Afghanistan.

And Japan can provide the financial support necessary for the implementation of these projects, Mottaki added.

Pointing to the recent elections in Iran and Japan, the Iranian foreign minister said that the new situation can help efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries.

The changes in Tehran-Tokyo relations will benefit both nations, he added.

He went on to say that the regular talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries can give a boost to their ties.

Sasae said the foreign ministries of Iran and Japan play an important role in efforts to enhance bilateral relations.

Commenting on the two countries’ joint projects in Afghanistan, he said that Iranian companies active in Afghanistan could be enlisted to help boost cooperation in the joint projects.

Iran, Japan hold talks on regional issues

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Oceania Mohammad Mahdi Akhoundzadeh and the visiting Japanese deputy foreign minister held talks on Saturday on bilateral relations and regional issues, particularly the Afghanistan crisis and developments in the Middle East.

Akhoundzadeh and Sasae reviewed Iran-Japan relations and discussed ways to increase cooperation and investment.

Akhoundzadeh also briefed Sasae on the expenses Iran has incurred in the efforts to increase security and maintain peace in the region, saying Tehran is ready to cooperate with Tokyo on the Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan issues.

Sasae said the two countries should review ways to expand cooperation on regional issues and particularly their joint efforts to help resolve the Afghanistan crisis.

The two officials also called for cooperation among friendly countries to help efforts to unite Lebanese political parties and to resolve the problems facing the Palestinians, especially those suffering under the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip.
