Iran-Japan ties must move beyond ‘transient developments’

TEHRAN, Nov. 8 (MNA) – A top Iranian legislator has said it is necessary that Iran and Japan move to expand their relationship beyond “transient developments” since the two countries share similar views on many issues.

Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chairman Alaeddin Borujerdi made the remarks in a meeting Taro Nakayama, the head of Iran-Japan parliamentary friendship committee here on Saturday.

Borujerdi said the Iranian parliament favors close ties with Japan. He added Iran and Japan enjoy great potential for scientific and cultural cooperation.

Pointing to Iran’s nuclear issue, Borujerdi insisted that Iran has taken great steps to build trust about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

He added, “Iran will never forego its right for a peaceful use of nuclear energy.”

Nakayama said relations with Tehran are important for his country in different respects.

Borujerdi also referred to the failure of U.S. military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying, “The world public opinion and the American people are waiting for a major change in the country’s policies.”

Joint investment in energy sector

Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani told Taro Nakayama that Iran and Japan are gifted with abundant opportunities for a joint investment in energy and industrial sectors and establish a good scientific and cultural cooperation.

The speaker said an improvement of relations between Tehran and Tokyo will help establish peace and security in the region.

Pointing to regional crises, Larijani said, “Regional problems especially crises in Palestine and Iraq can only be solved through a return to people’s votes and diplomatic ways.”

He said Iran’s policy is to help improve peace and security in the region.

He also added that Iran welcomes Japan’s independent policy toward developments in the Middle East.

For his part, Nakayama said Japan’s policy is to establish close relations with Iran in the region.

The Japanese lawmaker said Iran’s role is very important in resolving regional crises especially in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As the world is facing major changes dialogue with Iran is very important for Tokyo, the Japanese Nakayama stated.

He added that talks will meet the interest of the two countries.
