First Electric Overpass to Be Established in Tehran

TEHRAN, OCT. 6 (Mehr News Agency) -- The first electric overpass is to come into operation at Haft-e Tir Square by the end of February 2004, Hamid Behbahani, a Tehran Municipality traffic and transportation official, told the Mehr News Agency here on Thursday.

During the first stage of implementation of the plan, five overpasses are going to be erected in different streets and highways of Tehran, and the overpass at Haft-e Tir Square is the first one, which will be established on a street where the average speed of cars is not greater than 40km/h, Behbahani said.

He went on to say that experience has shown that Tehranis are not very interested in making use of overpasses, except when crossing highways and freeways, where average vehicle speeds are over 120km/h.

“To encourage people to make use of such facilities, we are equipping the streets with electric overpasses. Some other countries have also cooperated with us in constructing these overpasses,” he added.

Behbahani said that despite the 280 to 300 overpasses in Tehran, people hardly make use of them, but expressed hope that with the construction of electric overpasses, citizens will become more interested in using them.
