Qatar corruption inquiry "very very worrisome": Borrell

TEHRAN, Dec. 12 (MNA) – The corruption scandal currently rocking the European Parliament is “very, very worrisome,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday morning.

Belgian prosecutors charged European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili and three others with corruption on Sunday as part of a major investigation into an alleged illicit influence campaign by Qatar. As part of the probe, Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella’s home was raided on Saturday evening.

Investigators in Brussels suspect that Qatar used money and gifts to influence economic and political decisions in the Parliament.

Borrell said that, speaking as a former president of the European Parliament, the news was “very, very worrisome.”

“We are facing some events, some facts that certainly worry me,” he added while asking for the judicial process to be respected.

Calls for reform in the EU have increased following the Qatar-linked bribery case.
