Zarif says Iran, S Africa to forge closer coop.

TEHRAN, Jun. 14 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Wed. that he has held “excellent” talks with senior South African officials to forge closer cooperation between the two sides.

The Iranian top diplomat made the remarks in a tweet Wednesday night as he concluded his two-day visit to South Africa.

Zarif expressed delight at being back in South Africa, describing the country as a “long-time friend and partner” of Iran, and a “solid JCPOA support”.

Iranian FM Zarif and South African FM Lindiwe Sisulu met in Pretoria on Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign minister further added that he had reached an agreement with the South African side on a “joint mechanism to turn political will into action.”

Accompanied by a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, Zarif’s visit aimed at discussing ways to expand bilateral relations and confer with Foreign Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and President Cyril Ramaphosa on the future of the Iran nuclear deal.

The US unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal dubbed JCPOA has prompted Iran to engage in extensive talks with Russia, China, EU and other countries across the world in a bid to find ways to save the deal that would continue to serve Iran’s economic interests.
