MFA reacts to US sanction on governor of Iran’s Central Bank

TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) – Iranian foreign ministry issued a statement on Wednesday condemning US sanctions against officials of Central Bank and Iranian government as a measure violating the internal conventions which give immunity to officials.

“The performance of US government shows that it holds no respect to its international commitments,” reads the statement issued by Iranian foreign ministry on Wednesday.

The statement comes after the press release of US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Tuesday which designated 5 other Iranian individuals in the list of anti-Iran sanctions. The same entity imposed sanctions on Iran’s Central Bank Governor Valiollah Seif and Ali Tarzali, Assistant Director of the International Department of Iran’s Central Bank, last week.

According to Iranian diplomatic apparatus, the sanctions indicate the disregard of Americans to international norms and regulations which give immunity to governments and central banks of countries.

"Central banks play a role in shaping and implementing monetary policies and bringing monetary stability inside the countries and in the international system, so imposing sanctions on central bank officials is against customary and treaty obligations of governments to maintain international monetary policy. The US move, which indicates this government gives no weight to its international obligations, has prompted international observers to see the US government as an oath-breaker who pays no respect to international obligations,” reads the announcement.

“The right to adopt all legal and political solutions to counter the US Treasury Department’s move is fully reserved for the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as the Central Bank of Iran. We hold that continuing such destructive and unilateral moves by US will have dire consequences for international monetary and financial relations,” concludes the statement.
