The 53rd San Sebastian Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious in the Spanish- speaking world, opened in the Spanish city on Thursday with the film “Obaba” directed by Montxo Armendariz.
The movie is based on author Bernardo Atxaga’s book “Obabakoak”.
Terry Gilliam’s “Tideland”, Michael Winterbottom’s “A Cock and Bull Story”, Zhang Yang’s “Sunflower”, Andreas Dresen’s “Summer in Berlin”, and several other films are vying for the Golden Shell in the festival’s official competition section, in which Iranian cinema has no representative.
The 53rd San Sebastian Film Festival is also honoring Robert Wise with a major retrospective of his work, continuing its tradition of reviving the lesser-known films of a major classic director. In addition, this year’s festival is paying homage to filmmaker Abel Ferrara, who broke through with a string of titles in the 1990s such as "King of New York", "Bad Lieutenant", "The Addiction", and "The Funeral."
Considered one of the important events of the cinema calendar, the festival runs until September 24.
