Iran lodges complaint with UN over S Arabia’s anti-Iran threats

TEHRAN, Nov. 08 (MNA) – Iran’s UN envoy described Saudi Arabia’s anti-Iran allegations as “baseless and unfounded”, while calling for international community’s pressure on Riyadh to stop threatening other countries with the military action.

Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo made the remarks on Tuesday in a letter sent to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the President of the Security Council.

“The Government of Iran strongly condemns the baseless and unfounded allegations made by the Saudi authorities against the Islamic Republic of Iran and describes them as destructive and provocative in clear contradiction with article 4, paragraph 2 of the United Nations Charter, which is the prohibition of threat or use of force in international relations,” he noted.

“These provocative measures have no propose but to divert public opinion away from Saudi Arabia’s criminal actions against Yemen,” Khoshroo stressed.

Iranian envoy noted that the tragic humanitarian catastrophe has worsened in Yemen with the recent measures taken by the Saudi-led coalition to close all air, land and sea routes to Yemen more and more, especially in the face of cholera and famine. “The international community must recognize Saudi Arabia as responsible for all these crimes,” he added.

After more than two and a half years of blind attacks and massacres of innocent people in Yemen, the Saudi government and its allies must now understand that Yemen’s issue does not have a military solution, Khoshroo underlined, adding the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently stated that the solution to the Yemen’s crisis is possible only through the political process, with the participation of all Yemeni groups.

"The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has called for peace and stability in the countries of the region and has defined its interests in ensuring the stability of all its neighbors, especially the Persian Gulf states,” Iran’s UN envoy asserted.

He emphasized in the letter that the Islamic Republic of Iran once again demands restraint and rationalism, instead of provoking and threatening which could lead to further destabilization in the disturbed region.

The Houthi movement fired a missile at the King Khalid International Airport in northeastern Riyadh on Saturday. Earlier on Tuesday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman alleged that Iran was involved in supplying weapons to the Houthis, which he said “is a direct military aggression” by Iran against Saudi Arabia, a claims strongly denied by Iranian officials.
