Iran supports national solidarity in Iraq

TEHRAN, Aug. 09 (MNA) – Parliament speaker has said the time has come when all Iraqi factions and ethnic groups should unite against the forces of darkness and extremism.

Ali Larijani received Deputy Secretary General of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Barham Salih Tuesday evening. Mr. Salih is in Tehran and has visited Iran’s secretary of SNSC Ali Shamkhani earlier in morning.

Larijani told the meeting that Mosul, the sole stronghold of ISIL should fall to the unity and solidarity of all Iraqi ethnic and partisan groups; “the Islamic Republic of Iran actively supports participation of all Iraqi groups in political life of the country; the history of Iraq provides testimony to the fact of peaceful symbiosis of different ethnic and religious groups,” Mr. Larijani told his Kurdish guest. “Today, the major concern is fighting Takfirism and we hope their defeat in Mosul will bring stability and hope of peace to the multitudes of Iraqi public; however, Iraqis should be alert to the threat of provocateurs who had fueled the ethnic and religious differences to the detriment of all.”

“All Shia and Sunni groups should contribute to this process of solidarity,” Larijani proposed.

Mr. Salih for his part expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Islamic Republic of Iran to Region and Iraq in fighting terrorism and as a country for its unconditional help with the threats; “the collective memory of Iraqi people will never forget what their Iranian brothers had made for them in the time of need; we believe with recent Army success in fronts, that in both Iraq and Syria, ISIL has sustained crushing defeat and hope to see the complete fall of their strongholds to the Army and mobilization forces,” he added.

Mr. Salih was in general agreement with Larijani that ethnic and religious solidarity should target elements and circles trying to fuel tensions and leading only to anarchy in Iraq.
