Iranian official in Beirut discusses regional developments

TEHRAN, Mar. 18 (MNA) – Chairman of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations (SCFR) Kamal Kharrazi on Thu. held intensive talks with senior Lebanese political and religious authorities in Beirut on regional developments, particularly in Syria.

Foremer Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Kamal Kharrazi, heading a delegation, arrived in Beirut Wed. morning and held separate talks on Iran-Lebanon bilateral ties and regional developments with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Former President Émile Lahoud, and Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, Head of the Maronite Church in Lebanon.

Kharrazi stressed the importance of expansion of relations and cooperation between the two countries, deeming necessary the settlement of Lebanon’s problems by the Lebanese themselves and the election of a president for the country in the shortest possible time and without any foreign interference.

Kharrazi further highlighted the Islamic Republic’s support for Lebanon’s and Palestine’s resistance in facing the Zionist enemy, as well as a political solution for Syria and the fight against Takfiri terrorism.

"During the meeting, the current political developments of Lebanon was discussed and we underscored the positive and constructive role of Cardinal Rahi in solving the problems with which Beirut is currently gripped," Kharrazi added.  

He went on to add, “I assured Cardinal Rahi that the Islamic Republic will back any decisions the Lebanese people would take for resolving their own problems.”

Kharrazi arrived in Beirut on March 16 to hold talks with Lebanese officials on major regional developments including the issue of Syria and situation in Lebanon. He also held a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam, as well as Deputy Head of the Supreme Council for Lebanese Shia Muslims Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan on Thursday.
