"Calm and peaceful running of a competitive election was a praise-worthy success for the nation and government of Venezuela," said Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari on Wednesday, referring to Venezuela’s parliamentary elections where the voter turnout hit more than 70 percent.
Pointing to ‘friendly and brotherly bilateral ties’ in political, economic, and parliamentary fields, the official voiced hope for rapid development of all-out relations with securing interests of both sides.
In parliamentary elections held in Venezuela on December 6, 2015, the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) lost control of the National Assembly for the first time since 1999.
President Nicolás Maduro did not suspend the elections, while he knew the adverse result and polls had affirmed the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable leading by comfortable margins the ruling PSUV.
Venezuela's electoral council announced, on Wednesday, that the opposition garnered a huge majority in the parliamentary elections.
The severe economic downturn is speculated to have affected the elections' outcome to a great extent undermining the government popularity.
