The Russian air force has now the Shairat and Al Tayas airports in Homs province, in addition to Khmeimim airbase in Lattakia, used since September 30 to attack ISIL military infrastructure and its funding supplies.
Russian Kommersant newspaper quoted a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defense saying that the two airports will be used for fueling and repairs, thus providing logistics and air cover to Syrian ground forces in Deir Ezzor region and other southeastern zones.
According to the expert, the S-400 Triunf, Buk-M2 antiaircraft defense systems and Pantsir S1 missiles used in Khmeimim airbase cover all the Syrian airspace, and for that reason the two new airbases will be only used as refueling points.
The spokesman added that Russian helicopters operating in Syria have a short-range operation and need fuel service in zones near the combat fields.
Military sources recently said that having new bases in Syria will allow Moscow to increase to 100 the number of warplanes to fight against terrorism in that Arab nation.
