I have come here personally as the leader of the world's second biggest emitter of greenhouse gases to say that the United States not only recognizes its role in creating this problem but also it accepts its responsibility to do something about it, Obama said during the UN Conference on climate change (COP21) inaugurated this Monday in Paris.
During his intervention, Obama considered that the planet has reached a turning point.
Addressing more than 150 world leaders gathered for a UN summit aimed at reaching an agreement to curb global warming, he stated that we are the first generation to see the impact of climate change and the last one who can do something about it.
Our task here in Paris is turn these achievements into an enduring framework for human progress, Obama said. Not a stopgap solution but a long-term strategy that gives the world confidence for a low carbon future.
It is almost too late, but maybe we can reverse this trend, Obama added.
