UN demands solution to stateless children

NEW YORK, Nov. 04 (MNA) – The UN Agency for Refugee (ACNUR) called on Tuesday to solve the problem of stateless children, due to the impact it has on education, health and development of those human beings.

In some place of the planet, a child without nationality is born every 10 minutes, a situation that prevents him/her from studying, training or even opening a bank account, the entity warned in a report.

Millions of people suffer in the world from a phenomenon related in a great extent to non-recognition of their citizenship, due to ethnic, religious or gender reasons.

According to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, those affected, face discrimination during their whole life, encumbering their dreams and ambitions.

It is urgent in the world that we put an end to this situation and the frustration it generates, he said.

Guterres urged all States to adopt the necessary measures to eliminate the problem, as granting nationality to those born in their territories, because not doing it means to increase the number of the stateless population.

It is also important to reform laws, for women to be able to transfer their nationalities to their children, as fathers do, he remarked.

The United Nations is boosting a campaign aimed at eradicating the phenomenon by 2024.
