Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif attended a commemoration ceremony on Saturday on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the martyrdom of 8 Iranian diplomats and IRNA correspondent who were killed in the siege of the Iranian consulate in Mazar Sharif, Afghanistan, during the Taliban and Northern Alliance battles of Mazar Sharif.
The ceremony which marked its 17th anniversary was attended by the bereaved families of the martyred diplomats.
On August 8, 1998 Taliban forces captured Mazar Sharif, and took hostage 11 Iranian diplomats and a correspondent from Iran's state news agency IRNA at the Iranian consulate. Later it was confirmed that 8 of the Iranian diplomats and the IRNA correspondent, Mahmoud Saremi, were killed by the Taliban militia attacking the consulate.
Iran has named August 8 as the National Reporters' Day in the memory of martyred Mahmoud Saremi.
