The plant, expected to fully come into operation by 2008, is slated to be built in Siah Bisheh located in Iran’s northern province of Mazandaran in the southern shores of the Caspian Sea.
When completed, the plant will play an important role in providing base and peak-load power and greatly ease the power shortage in the region. The hydroelectric power station has the electricity generation capacity of 1,040 megawatts and 960 megawatts at the peak load demand and the off peak demand hours, respectively.
A reduction of about $19 million per annum in the costs in comparison with similar projects namely, the thermal power stations, creation of a tourist and recreational attractions as well as providing job opportunities in the region have all been cited as the advantages of building the hydroelectric dam and power plant.
