First Shiraz International Book Fair opens

TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (MNA) -- The first Shiraz International Book Fair is currently being held in Azadi Park of Shiraz, Fars province. It opened on August 24 and runs until September 3.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fair, Abdorreza Lotfollahi, the director of the Cultural Affairs Department of the Shiraz Municipality, said that a total of 2.8 million volumes of 25,000 titles would be presented at the fair.

Seven foreign publishers from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Austria, and Italy are scheduled to participate.

The fair is the only other international book fair held in Iran apart from the Tehran Book Fair.

It will feature special pavilions for books on women’s affairs and books for children and young people, workshops offering instruction in calligraphy and painting, and entertainment.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fair, Fars Province Governor Mohammad Ibrahim Ansari Lari said that city governments should sponsor cultural affairs.

He added that the Shiraz Municipality is sponsoring the book fair, which is a significant step in fulfilling the municipalities’ role of urban management.

“Shiraz is Iran’s cultural capital. In such a city, its municipal government should establish a suitable place for presenting book exchanges, especially in view of the dearth of bookshops in the city,” the Fars governor said.
