Three Countries Return Iranian Historical Documents

TEHRAN, Aug. 14 (MNA) -- National Document Organization (NDO) Deputy Chairman Kianush Kiani announced on Saturday that 400 microfilms and 10,000 photos from various Iranian historical eras have been returned to the country.

He added that these documents were returned based on agreements made with Azerbaijan, Russia, and South Africa and through the efforts of the NDO and the National Library of the Islamic Republic of Iran to bring back Iran’s historical documents and old manuscripts.

“Since these documents are firm documentation of the history and identity of the Iranian nation, the NDO and the National Library consulted with various countries that possess Iranian historical documents and asked them to return the symbols of the national identity, resulting in 400 microfilms and 10,000 pictures being returned. The NDO and the National Library will continue their activities to bring back Iran’s historical documents”, the NDO deputy chairman said.

He explained that the NDO and the National Library made the first agreement to return Iranian historical documents with Azerbaijan. NDO officials then made a similar agreement with Russia and later signed an agreement with South Africa on the return of Iranian documents, he added.

Many Iranian documents are currently being stored in the archives of the former East India Company and in France, and efforts to acquire them are being made in order to increase knowledge about Iran’s history, he said. The NDO and the National Library intend to consult with them to make arrangements to return the Iranian documents, he added.

An exhibition displaying Iran’s historical documents will be held in Austria this year in which officials of the NDO and the National Library will participate and negotiate with participating countries that possess Iranian historical documents and hopefully agreements will be signed with them, Kiani noted.

He also announced that an exhibition displaying Iranian marriage contracts from one hundred years ago will be held in Russia in 2005.

In conclusion, Kiani said that holding such exhibitions will improve the performance of NDO officials as well as enhance interactions with other countries, adding that Azerbaijan, Russia, and South Africa are cooperating with Iran in a positive manner in this regard.
