Mohammad-Ali Najafi has sent a letter to UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, asking her organization to prevent Azerbaijan from replacing the Persian inscriptions, a number Persian news reported on Saturday.
He also criticized Azerbaijani officials for their policy of opposing the Persian language, history and luminaries. He also said that the removal of the tiles surely cannot alter the lofty spirit and significant status of the poet.
As a result, Najafi has asked UNESCO, as the major custodian of cultural affairs in the world, to take immediate action to halt this anti-cultural movement and help return Persian inscriptions to the mausoleum of Nezami.
In August 21, the director of Nezami Ganjavi Centre of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Khalil Yusifli, announced his center’s plan to replace the tiles inscribed with poems in the Persian language in Nezami’s mausoleum with analogous poems in the Azerbaijani language.
