Iraq frees 30 Iranian prisoners: ambassador

TEHRAN, Jan. 13 (MNA) -- Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Danaiifar announced on Wednesday that 30 Iranians held in Iraqi prisons have been freed.

Talking to the Mehr News Agency, Danaiifar said due to efforts by the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad and also measures taken by Iraqi officials, an order was issued to release 50 Iranian nationals who had illegally entered the country.

“50 of them were released today (on Wednesday) and 20 others will be freed in the next two days,” the ambassador added.

About 15 days ago Iraqi President Jalal Talebani ordered the release of a number of Iranians detained in Iraqi prisons.

Most of these prisoners are being held in the Iraqi city of Al Nasiriyah.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Danaiifar called on Iranians to visit Iraqi religious sites only through Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization.
