The Yemeni army has launched attacks on its Shia population, who say they are trying to reverse the political, economic, and religious marginalization of the Zaydi Shia community.
The Zaydi community has accused Saudi Arabia of supporting the Yemeni armed forces through its decision to allow them to launch attacks from its territory.
Addressing worshipers at Friday prayers in Tehran, Jannati said certain countries, with Saudi Arabia in the lead, are committing acts that make it appear that they are determined to exterminate all Shias.
“Why is Saudi Arabia sending airplanes to oppress Shias?” he asked.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Jannati called Iran’s new subsidy plan comprehensive and revolutionary.
The subsidy bill -- also known as the economic reform plan -- would allow the government to normalize prices over a five-year period.
The plan is surgery, but the bleeding must be minimized, Ayatollah Jannati observed.
He also stressed the need to inform people about the possibility of inflation, which could be a result of the implementation of the plan.
Commenting on Iranians’ massive turnout for the anti-U.S. rally of November 4, he said Iran will not bow to the U.S. pressure out of humiliation.
“When the U.S. Congress allocates $55 million (for a) fund to weaken the Islamic Republic of Iran, this means war with the (Islamic) system and (Iranian) people.
“I am surprised to see that certain people do not understand, or act as if they do not understand.”
