IKIA expansion plan ready by Thursday: official

TEHRAN, Oct. 19 (MNA) – The Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA) General Director Reza Qadimi stated on Sunday that the airport’s expansion plan will be finalized by Thursday, aiming at increasing the passenger transportation capacity to 95 millions by 2030.

IKIA can now handle more than 5 million passengers and 120 thousand tons of cargo per year; however, with the completion of the expansion plan, the target of 95 million passengers per year can be achieved by 2030, Qadimi said, adding that the expansion plan may change based on requirements.

IKIA former general director Mehdi Hamidanpur said that the expansion plan is in the frame of a 26-year program.

The construction of a new terminal for Hajj passengers in addition to adding elevators, escalators, and walkways are among IKIA’s short-term expansion plans.

IKIA, located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Tehran was inaugurated in February 2004, 30 years after its conception.

It is meant to replace Mehrabad International Airport, which is in the west of the city, now inside the city boundaries.
