The recent statements by American officials about the necessity of direct dialogue between Iran and the US have once again brought this issue to the forefront of political news. The main question is, despite all the experience of America's breach of promise and hostility, why do they still insist on repeating this failed path?
The reality is that one of the most important reasons for the Islamic Republic of Iran's refusal to negotiate again with the US is experience; a bitter and recurring experience that has shown that whenever we sit down at the negotiating table with the Americans with the intention of opening economic and political knots, in the end it is the American side that has broken the promise and shown hostility and enmity in return for Iran's good intentions.
The most important example of this experience was the nuclear negotiations with the P5+1 group; an agreement that became known as the "JCPOA". The Americans, especially during the Trump era, not only failed to adhere to their commitments to lift sanctions, but also brought the path to implementing the JCPOA to a standstill by unilaterally withdrawing from the agreement. At the same time, Washington also prevented Europe from implementing its commitments through pressure and threats; that is, in a situation where the Europeans had no independent will, the United States also deprived them of the small possibility of financial and banking relations with Iran. This process of breaking promises did not end with the JCPOA alone.
In recent months, the same pattern of deception and breach of commitment was repeated in the indirect negotiations with the United States in Oman, which had been held for five rounds and were about to enter a sixth round. Right on the eve of this round of talks and while the atmosphere of the negotiations could move towards a positive outcome, the Zionist regime attacked Iran's nuclear facilities with the green light of the United States. When, after 12 days, this attack was on the verge of failure, the Americans themselves rushed directly to Tel Aviv's aid and violated Iranian territory. These are all objective and documented experiences of the Iranian nation. Experiences that prove that any trust in American promises will in practice lead to increased pressure, influence, and insecurity. Today, there is no logical reason or political justification for Iran to try the same costly path again.
