Iran hails Qatar, Oman's constructive role in prisoner swap

TEHRAN, Sep. 19 (MNA) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has appreciated the constructive role of Qatar and Oman in the prisoner swap with the US.

Following the prisoner swap between Iran and the US, which was mediated by Qatar and Oman, Bagheri met and held talks with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar and the Special Representative of the Sultan of Oman in a separate meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York on Tuesday.

Thanking the efforts of Qatar and Oman in conducting prisoner swap, Bagheri described the efforts of the two countries to release Iran's frozen funds in South Korea as constructive.

They also discussed and exchanged views on the latest developments in bilateral relations and the continuation of multilateral initiatives.

During the meetings, the special efforts and attention of the Sultan of Oman and the Emir of Qatar to the bilateral and multilateral issues were appreciated.

Iran and the United States agreed to free five prisoners each as part of a deal that also included the release of billions of Iranian assets, which were illegally frozen in South Korea under the pretext of US sanctions.

The funds, owed to Iran for exports of oil and gas, had been frozen in South Korean bank accounts since 2018 after the administration of then President Donald Trump pulled the US from a landmark nuclear deal with Iran, further aggravating tensions with Tehran.
