TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) – Nabih Berri has been re-elected as Speaker of Lebanon’s Parliament for the sixth time since 1992, with 98 out of 128 votes in his favor.

Nabih Berri, who has held the position of assembly speaker since 1992, was reappointed for the sixth time with 98 votes in his favor, while 29 MPs cast a blank ballot and 1 that was annulled.

"I would like to give my deepest thanks to my fellow MPs for trusting me with the responsibility of heading this parliament for a sixth consecutive time," Berri said during his speech following his victory. 

He went on to say that the new Parliament will convene in a strategic and political atmosphere, and noted one of the assembly's key missions as decision-making in the oil sector.

Hezbollah, Amal, the Future Movement - led by outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri - the Progressive Socialist Party and the March 8 Alliance have all declared their support for Berri.

Meanwhile, Elie Ferzli was elected as deputy speaker with 72 votes.
