Iranian Armed Forces Committed to Maintaining Peace and Stability in Region: Chief Commander

TEHRAN (Mehr News Agency) -- The Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Army Major General Mohammad Salimi said here Sunday that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are committed to keep peace and stability in the region.

Speaking at joint morning parade to mark the return of the prisoners of war to the country he said the enhancement of the Iranian armed forces is meant for the establishment of security in the region and Iran doest have any eye on other countries’ soil.

On August 17, 1990 the first group of Iranian POW arrived in the country from Iraq. Iraq imposed a bloody war against Iran in 1980 which lasted until 1988 that led to many human and material damages.

Iran doesn’t consider any threat against its national security as insignificant, he said, adding that the army is enhancing its military capabilities and readiness to thwart any perceived threats.

He said the Iranian nation expects the army to safeguard its independence and sovereignty and the army is committed to take care of the aspirations of the honored freed POWs.

The Iranian armed forces are completely independent and no foreign country can dictate on it, the army chief said.

The top officials of the arrogant powers know very well that Iran wants to have good relations with other countries while keeping its independence at the same time, Salimi noted.
