Astana initiative seeking an end to Syrian crisis

THERAN, Feb. 05 (MNA) – Head of Supreme National Security Council has received President Putin’s special envoy on Syria Mr. Alexander Lavrentiev in Tehran.

Mr. Ali Shamkhani and Lavrentiev discussed the latest situation in Syria and joint Iran-Russia efforts to fight terrorism in Syria.

Shamkhani told the meeting that the major part of the objectives set for the Astana meeting had largely been fulfilled and hailed Iran’s and Russian positive role in restoring stability to Syria after Aleppo success as a turning point in fight against terrorism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to a political solution to crisis in Syria and believes military option is only good for tackling ISIL and Al-Qaeda and other extremist terrorists; as long as these petty terrorists receive logistical support and arms from their regional ideologues, a political solution and peace will be too far to achieve in Syria; this is a concern the trilateral meeting in Moscow and the initiative seeks to answer,” he emphasized.

Shamkhani also objected that backers of terrorist groups would not play a role in the future of Syria if they continued their current conduct of supporting terrorism; “the initiative coming from Astana session would be a bedrock and would provide an example of how a regional crisis would be solved using indigenous capacities for peace,” he added.

Lavrentiev for his part hailed Iran’s constructive role in Syria and shared the view that Astana session had been quite a success for three countries organizers of the meeting. “Russia, Iran and Syria will continue to target terrorists as long as they continue their military conduct and political dialogue will not affect the concrete fight on the ground against terrorism,” he briefly said.
