Iran slams terror attack in Iraq’s Karbala

TEHRAN, Aug. 30 (MNA) – Iran has strongly condemned a Sunday suicide bombing near the holy Shia city of Karbala, in southern Iraq, which left at least 15 people dead and 16 others injured.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi passed on his words of sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Iraq, wishing a swift recovery to all who were injured.

“Takfiri terrorists carry out these heinous assaults and slaughter innocent people while fully aware that they are drawing their last breaths in Iraq,” Ghasemi said.

The Iranian diplomat deemed such blind and barbarous acts the terrorists’ reactionary response to their repeated defeats at the hands of Iraqi Army and popular forces. He expressed hope that through collective efforts of the government, army, and popular forces of Iraq, as well as with unity and empathy among all religious and ethnic groups in that country, the evil shadow of terrorism would leave Iraq and the region as soon as possible.

Ghasemi further hoped that all people in Iraq would join hands in restoring peace and prosperity to their country.

A suicide bombing claimed by ISIL terrorist group killed at least 15 people and injured 16 at a wedding party near the holy Shia city of Karbala late on Sunday. According to the police, five gunmen including the suicide bomber attacked the celebration in Ain al-Tamr, west of Karbala in southern Iraq. All the attackers were killed by security forces.
