Ali Larijani and Christine Defraigne discussed bilateral ties between Iran and the EU and regional development notably ongoing terrorism which had ruined the Middle East. Larijani promised improved parliamentary relations with Belgium where Iran’s new 10th Parliament would be even more active; Iran welcomes extended ties with Belgium in railroad, pharmaceutical industries and medical equipment, refurbishing Iran’s outdated oil and gas facilities, and renewable energies; Iran provides investment opportunities in the framework of financing our national projects for Belgian and EU investors,” Larijani told Belgian official.
On regional issues, Larijani suggested that the EU should engage more actively in fighting terrorism, since the multitudes of migrants and refugees had swarmed European countries as a result of the crises.
Ms. Defraigne for her part said that long history of Belgian-Iranian relations had justified Belgian presence in the country; “We congratulate Iran on holding a just and healthy elections of the Parliament; Belgium is a founding member of the EU and would have influential role in guiding the Union’s policies; Belgium has capabilities to cooperate with Iran in medicine, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals,” she told the meeting. “Improvements into banking interactions would help shape better trade relations and as the head of a legislative body, I would make necessary policy recommendations to Belgian trade sector.”
“Iran-EU talks are very important in terms of regional security; Belgium is a victim of terrorism. We believe it should be fought effectively. Otherwise, we should expect even worse days for Europe,” she said.
