Maryam Shayani Rad, an MSc. student of Nanophysics in Ferdowsi University of Medical Sciences had worked on a research project ‘Nano-Sealer in Root Canal Therapy Using HTND (high-temperature neutron diffraction).’
The most failures cases in root canal filling are due to failed material (gutta percha) and the sealer which seals the filing material. Sealers usually wear away over the time. To address this issue effectively, the project by Shayani Rad hit a nanomaterial which improves the sealer material quality. The filling material do not usually sticks to the canal walls and gutta percha is used to fill the empty spaces between the canal walls and the filling material. Sealers are generally a fluid and powder.
A good-quality sealer should provide an effective barrier against infiltration of microorganisms and other material. The nanomaterial developed in the project could be used to prevent failure of root canal and the loss of natural tooth. The nanomaterial used in sealer also keeps the filling material, thus providing an economy of operation. Currently, Sealer 26, AH Plus is used for that purpose. The experiments had compared HTND nano-sealer and Sealer 26, AH Plus in more than 500 human and animal samples in Ferdowsi University of Medical Sciences.
