A doctorate candidate in Iran succeeded in producing bioactive glass out of eggshell. Reza Arab the research conductor is a PhD candidate in medical engineering who has been sponsored by Fannavaran Yazd Company for his dissertation.
Bioactive glasses are a group of surface reactive glass-ceramic biomaterials that can be applied in many medical areas including in treating dentine hypersensitivity and promoting enamel remineralization, and synthetic bone graft materials for general orthopaedic, craniofacial (bones of the skull and face), maxillofacial and periodontal (the bone structure that supports teeth) repair.
The achievement is in laboratory scale but it is expected to be commercialized and find a considerable market in the world.
Reza Arab's PhD dissertation has also been approved by Nano-Technology Development Committee as a thesis meeting industrial needs. Arab has been conducting the research in company with Professor Massoud Hafezi Ardakani, Professor Saeed Hesaraki and Professor Nader Nezafati.
