Criminals Hidden Behind Curtain In Saddam’s Trial Should Be Tried: Analyst

TEHRAN, July 10 (MNA) -- Political analyst Ne’mat Ahmadi said here Wednesday that Iran should not only file complaints with the Iraqi court against Saddam Hussein for the crimes he committed during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war but should also file complaints against those who supported Saddam during the war.

Ahmadi noted that all Judiciary officials are prepared to cooperate with the Iranian Foreign Ministry to file a complaint against Saddam but criticized the performance of the Foreign Ministry in this regard. He said that the Iranian government should not allow the Iraqi court to only try Saddam, adding that Iran should try the criminals who are hidden behind the curtain.

He told the Mehr News Agency that Iran should follow up the issue through international legal institutions and should not rely solely on personal complaints.

He went on to say that apparently the United States delivered Saddam to the Iraqi Transitional Government so that the new government, as the representative of the Iraqi nation, would try Saddam and his accomplices in the Baath regime for their crimes against the Iraqi people.

He added that none of these trials, or even the execution of Saddam and his accomplices, would restore the rights of Iranians which were violated during the war.

Referring to Saddam’s war crimes against Iran such as using chemical weapons and carrying out massacres, Ahmadi noted that Saddam’s trial has begun with the Iraqi people as the only plaintiffs. He added that Iraqis have the right to seek justice in the case but asked what the Iranians’ role would be in the trial.

He said that he believes that there is a plot to ensure that those who supported Saddam by facilitating his programs to produce weapons of mass destruction are never implicated in the ex-dictator’s trial.

He concluded by saying that the Iraqi government should pay reparations for the damage inflicted on Iran during the war, adding that the Foreign Ministry and the Judiciary should work together to stand up for Iran’s rights and should not be satisfied if Saddam is the only person tried.
