Ceiling of Kerman Grand Bazaar Damaged in Earthquake

Upon hearing the news, several experts were dispatched to the region to examine the damage, said head of Kerman Cultural Heritage Department, adding that the first measures have been taken to avoid more damage to parts of the ceiling.

Examining different parts of the bazaar, the cultural heritage expert Ali Bani Assadi said that the ceiling of the entrance of Ganj’ali Khan Caravansary has also sustained damage.

The old structure of Kerman Bazaar was comprised of caravansaries, houses and arcades. It houses several sections including the main bazaar, Ebrahimkhan Bazaar and Mesgarha (coppersmiths) Bazaar.

Kerman Bazaar like other bazaars in Iran have long played a major role in economic development, acting as a meeting place, and a place to show the traditional architecture of the city. The bazaar of Keram is located in the middle of the city. It looks like a straight line beginning and ending with the two gates of Arg and the Vakil Mosque. It is almost 3km long dividing the city between north and south.
