The total marks an increase from 2024 and underscores what the federation described as a rapidly worsening crisis for press freedom globally, Al-Maydeen reported.
“This is not just a statistic, it's a global red alert for our colleagues,” IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger told AFP.
He said the rising number of killings reflects a broader failure to protect journalists working in war zones and politically volatile environments.
The IFJ expressed particular concern over the situation in the Palestinian territories, where it documented the killing of 56 media workers in 2025 amid "Israel’s" ongoing war in Gaza.
“We've never seen anything like this: so many deaths in such a short time, in such a small area,” Bellanger said.
Beyond Gaza, journalists were also killed in countries including Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, Peru, and India, highlighting the global scope of the threat facing media workers.
