TEHRAN, June 29 (MNA) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said here on Thursday that the most important duties of the judicial system are guaranteeing social and economic security, safeguarding the people’s dignity, and forcefully dealing with lawbreakers to teach others a lesson.

The efficiency and competence of the Judiciary are very important factors necessary for the Islamic system to achieve its goals, the Leader told Judiciary officials in a meeting commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti.

The judicial system should implement justice, observe the law, deal with intimidators and opportunists, and establish an atmosphere of tranquility and security in society, he added.

Individuals involved in economic corruption must be dealt with in a serious manner so that economic security can be established, Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

The Leader rejected the view that cracking down on individuals involved in economic corruption would lead to “economic insecurity”.

Bringing corrupt individuals to justice will prepare the ground for more sound economic activities and give businessmen a sense of investment security, he explained.

Ayatollah Khamenei also stated that respecting the dignity of the people is very important.

Sullying a person’s reputation, spreading slanderous rumors, and making unfounded accusations against people are all violations of the sharia (Islamic law), he added.

Thanking Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmud Shahrudi and other Judiciary officials and staff for their efforts, he said, “If the people regard the Judiciary as their protector and have an optimistic view of it, then it can be said that the Judiciary has achieved its goals.”

But if the people do not have such a view, more efforts must be made, he added.

Much work may have been done, but the “output” of this work and the people’s “satisfaction” should be considered the criteria, the Leader said.

If corrupt individuals, and especially those within the judicial system, are firmly dealt with, the people will be gladdened, he observed.

“Strict monitoring of the activities of the judicial system, the use of modern technology, planning, and implementation of an orderly system would increase the people’s confidence.”

The Leader said the current “coordination” among the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of government provides a great opportunity, and the three branches should perform their duties with serious determination by cooperating with each other.

He also advised Judiciary officials to make optimal use of the current situation to present a concrete example of an Islamic judicial system.
