Indonesia has dismissed Israeli media reports that President Prabowo Subianto plans to travel to Israel following his visit to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Foreign Minister Sugiono on Monday told local media there was "no such plan,” explaining that Prabowo will return to Jakarta following his participation in the Gaza peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.
“As per the initial plan, the president will return to the homeland after the event in Egypt is completed,” Sugiono, who is accompanying Prabowo, said in a written statement, cited by the Indonesian news outlet Tempo.
According to the Turkish state television, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang rejected the rumors as well. “Not true,” said Mewengkang while responding to journalists’ questions on whether the president was planning to travel to the occupied territories.
The statements contradict multiple reports in Israeli media, including “The Times of Israel” and “Ynet News,” suggesting that preparations were being made for a groundbreaking visit by the Indonesian leader as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.
However, “The Jerusalem Post” published in occupied Palestine had rejected the claims.
Prabowo is currently in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, where he, along with over 20 world leaders, attended a peace conference on Gaza. He had pledged to deploy 20,000 Indonesian troops as potential peacekeepers in Gaza.
Indonesia, which is home to the largest Muslim population in the world, has not diplomatic relations with the Israeli regime.
